Old Town Albuquerque is gearing up to celebrate Día de los Muertos, a vibrant and meaningful tradition honoring loved ones who have passed. From October 25th to November 4th, 2024, the historic district will be transformed into a captivating wonderland of color, culture, and remembrance!
Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday celebrating the lives of deceased loved ones through colorful altars, food offerings, and festive traditions. It's a time to remember and honor the departed, rather than mourn them.
Old Town's Día de los Muertos celebration centers around family-friendly fun and cultural demonstrations. The celebration will include movie showings that kids and adults alike will love, with both Coco and The Book of Life being projected onto the adobe walls of the church courtyard. Everyone will also be entranced by the Globitos Candlelight Glow, which will feature 20-foot model hot air balloons illumiating the streets and the courtyard.
A variety of cultural performances and processions are included in the week-long program. There will be a colorful Catrina procession, a traditional dance of the Matachines, and a candlelight procession. Everyone is invited to engage by contributing to the community altar. Bring your own ofrenda to adorn the Old Town Plaza!
The environment is truly enchanting. The streets will be adorned with marigolds, creating a rich floral smell. There is music in the air. Candles glow all around. You're sure to be moved!
